Personal Branding: A Necessity, Not a Choice, for Senior Leaders

What you will learn: In business, personal branding is not a self-promotion campaign but is necessary, making business leaders memorable and influential. Personal branding involves crafting an authentic professional identity that aligns with your unique strengths and values. Why is it crucial? It delivers authenticity amid AI disruption, effective differentiation in a competitive world, fosters confidence, and deepens self-awareness. Furthermore, it fuels career advancement and enhances your communication skills, making you a more persuasive and influential leader. To embark on this journey, follow six essential steps: define your purpose, understand your audience, craft your personal narrative, execute a communication plan, build your network, and continually monitor and adapt your personal brand. Invest in your personal brand because it's an investment in your future as a business leader.

At the core of every successful business leader's journey lies a silent force, an unspoken secret that transcends titles and achievements. It's the power of personal branding. Why do I believe so profoundly in the transformative impact of personal branding for business leaders?

Several years ago, I attended a conference where two keynote speakers took the stage. The first, a seasoned executive, presented numbers, facts, and industry jargon. While undoubtedly knowledgeable, their speech failed to leave a lasting impression. The second speaker, on the other hand, weaved a narrative that resonated with the audience. They shared their personal experiences, vision, and unique journey to success. The impact was palpable.

In business leadership, the power of personal branding is the second speaker. It's a fundamental element that can make or break the path to success. It's the difference between being another face in the crowd and standing out as a memorable, influential leader.

As an experienced communication coach, I've witnessed firsthand the transformational impact of personal branding. In this post, I'll explain why personal branding is crucial for business leaders and how it can elevate your leadership.

Defining Personal Branding

Personal branding is the method through which executives create and promote a unique professional identity, online and offline, to achieve specific career and business goals. This identity encapsulates their distinct skills, expertise, values, and reputation.

More technically, personal branding is a structured approach to crafting a standout professional identity based on an individual's distinctive competencies and beliefs, enhancing their credibility, authority, and impact. It involves practices like storytelling, maintaining a strong online presence (e.g., a well-curated LinkedIn profile or personal website), and creating and disseminating thought leadership content. This process harnesses an executive's distinct qualities to advance their career, opening doors to more opportunities, networking, and recognition in their organization or industry.

Here are some strong examples of personal branding:

  • Susan Wojcicki's "Milestone Meetups" - In early 2023,  Susan Wojcicki stepped down as YouTube's CEO after nearly a decade in the role. During her tenure at the helm, she built a personal brand centered on fostering creativity and connecting with content creators. In a unique and entertaining move, she began hosting a video series on YouTube called "Milestone Meetups," where she interviewed prominent YouTubers. This series allowed her to interact directly with the platform's key influencers and gain insights into their experiences and needs. Through these interviews, she demonstrated her brand as a CEO who values and understands the YouTube community, strengthening her reputation as a leader deeply connected to the platform's users.

The Value of a Personal Brand

So, why do many people hesitate to invest in cultivating their personal brand? From my experience, one common obstacle is the perception that we lack time. Building a personal brand is an investment, and it can be pretty demanding, particularly if you're fully committed to your job. Young professionals may find it even more challenging, given their limited experience to draw from.

Additionally, cultural factors come into play, as numerous societies worldwide often relay stories warning against being seen as overly ambitious or assertive, which can deter individuals from actively developing their personal brand. In Japan, for example, “the nail that sticks out gets hammered down.”

However, a well-crafted personal brand holds immense value in today's complex world as it provides a compelling mix of visibility and credibility:

  • Deliver Authenticity Amid AI Disruption - Consider the pervasive impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI), which has disrupted numerous industries and, in some cases, sown seeds of distrust. Standing out as a relatable, authentic human in a time marked by technological automation engenders trust, fosters stronger connections, and sets you apart in an increasingly digital and depersonalized environment.

  • Effective Differentiation in a Competitive World - Personal branding provides a platform to stand out amidst a sea of talent and innovation, showcasing your distinctive qualities. An effective personal brand sets you apart, making you not just another candidate, manager, or leader but a memorable and compelling figure. This differentiation is a crucial advantage in a competitive environment, propelling your career and fostering a loyal and inspired team.

  • Personal Branding Fosters Confidence - An often overlooked yet invaluable benefit of personal branding is its role as a catalyst for building confidence. As you embark on the journey of personal brand development, you'll naturally gravitate towards like-minded peers who appreciate your unique strengths and contributions and understand your field's intricacies. This recognition and sense of belonging can significantly boost your confidence. Moreover, as your personal brand expands, the tangible business and career opportunities that arise are significant confidence boosters as your expertise and services become increasingly sought.

  • Personal Branding Cultivates Self-Awareness - Self-awareness is a crucial element for professional success and skill development, including Executive Presence. Despite the widespread belief that 95% of professionals are self-aware, research by psychologist Tasha Eurich shows that only about 15% truly are. Crafting a personal brand entails reflection on values, strengths, weaknesses, and unique qualities, fostering deep self-awareness about goals and desired perceptions. This self-awareness enables individuals to set precise objectives, make informed decisions, and align their actions with their personal brand, promoting personal growth. It also establishes them as authentic, self-assured leaders, enhancing trust and confidence among peers, colleagues, and superiors and advancing their careers.

  • Career Advancement - A robust personal brand is instrumental for career advancement as it opens doors to new opportunities and enhances your chances of securing exciting projects and promotions. Business leaders with well-established personal brands are often sought after for advisory roles or panel discussions. Additionally, having a positive digital presence can be a valuable asset when pursuing new job opportunities, as decision-makers tend to favor candidates with strong personal brands. Furthermore, a solid personal brand can attract prospects to you, sparing you the need to actively seek them out, whether it's collaborations, partnerships, or speaking engagements. Personal branding also fosters adaptability, allowing you to navigate evolving career landscapes by aligning your brand with your changing skills and interests, making it easier to transition into new roles or industries. Investing in your personal brand is a strategic approach to achieving long-term career success, emphasizing sustainability and fulfillment over immediate gains.

  • Communicating Effectively - Effective communication is at the core of successful leadership; personal branding enhances this aspect. There is only one successful personal branding with effective communication, but the relationship works both ways. Personal branding can also make you a better communicator. Your communication becomes inherently more persuasive and influential with a well-defined personal brand. This, in turn, leads your team and stakeholders to be more receptive to your insights and recommendations and more likely to act upon them. Your personal brand is a magnetic force, drawing people to you and your message, making your communication not just a directive but a resonant call to action that inspires and motivates those around you. It is a powerful tool for building trust and credibility, ultimately helping to make you a more impactful leader.

For these reasons, establishing a personal brand is not a luxury but a necessity. Follow these 6 steps to build your powerful personal brand.

Building Your Personal Brand

Your personal brand, especially your leadership brand, sets the tone for how you're perceived by your team, peers, and industry. It can be a powerful tool for building trust, credibility, and influence.

Here are the 6 essential steps to building your powerful personal brand:

  1. Define Your Purpose, Style, and Values - Your personal brand takes shape when you define your core values, leadership style, and guiding principles. Begin by pondering what you truly stand for and the type of leader you aspire to become. Craft a long-term vision and mission, outlining the impact you intend to have on the diverse audiences that matter to you, personally and professionally. Consider the values you wish to embody as you work towards your goals. Dive deeper into your personal narrative by exploring your significance for others, recurring interests, competencies, and character traits. Once done, create a personal statement covering four crucial components: your target audiences, the unique value you bring, the competitive peers you distinguish yourself from, and your specific set of skills. In doing so, you lay the foundation for a robust personal brand that will resonate with your intended audience and propel your career.

  2. Understand Your Audiences - To build a compelling and resonant personal brand, you must have a profound grasp of your audiences, encompassing not only your team, colleagues, and industry peers but also potential clients, investors, and the wider public. Start by researching audiences to unearth their expectations from a leader like yourself. This could involve surveys, one-on-one conversations, or online analytics to gather valuable insights. Recognize that different stakeholders might have varying needs and desires: Your team might value transparency and mentorship, while industry peers may appreciate innovative thought leadership. Furthermore, consider the broader public's perception of you and your organization, as it can significantly impact your brand. Utilize these findings to tailor your messaging and actions, ensuring they align with the expectations and values of your diverse audiences, thereby strengthening your personal brand effectively.

  3. Craft Your Personal Narrative: Building a compelling personal brand involves creating a narrative that showcases your journey, values, and vision. Your narrative should be a source of inspiration and resonance for your audience. Remember, a brand is not merely a collection of descriptors; it's rooted in the meaningful stories you've shared and that your audience has embraced. Identify, craft, and refine the narratives that effectively communicate your brand, drawing upon moments when you felt most authentic, alive, and impactful and when your uniqueness was the key to success. As you fully embody the brand you aspire to, your personal value proposition becomes more memorable and resonant and highly accessible and persuasive when conveyed through the captivating power of storytelling.

  4. Execute a great communication plan: Authenticity is essential to establish and communicate your personal brand effectively. Consistently convey your values, vision, and principles through various channels, including speeches, articles, and social media, as authenticity fosters trust and credibility. It's equally important to showcase your expertise and cement your status as an industry authority. To solidify your leadership brand, you can share your knowledge through thought leadership articles, webinars, or speaking engagements. Also, communicating your brand story requires a well-structured communication and media plan that specifies the channels and topical content pillars for conveying your brand. Your communication plan should embrace various media types, such as owned, earned, and paid media, to expand your narrative's discoverability, awareness, and resonance among your target audience. While self-promotion may initially feel uncomfortable, it's essential to outline what makes you valuable and provide people with shortcuts to understand your offerings. Considering their media consumption habits, you can tailor your media tactics to your audiences. For instance, if your goal is to attract Forbes Global 2000 companies, an article within a relevant B2B trade journal may be more relevant than a TikTok video.

  5. Build Your Network - Networking is an indispensable tool for personal branding. Networking not only aids in nurturing critical relationships but also plays an integral role in personal growth and development, benefiting the individual and how their stakeholder perceive them. It's not merely about retaining your position; it's about bolstering and enhancing it. Networking is crucial for building a personal brand because people connect with and trust authentic individuals. Just as you'd opt for a product recommended by a friend, a personal brand establishes that personal connection, and your network becomes an extension of your brand. When you build and align your brand with other like-minded business leaders, you find yourself in the same category as them, which can be a significant asset.

Building your online network is as essential as your offline presence. Leveraging social platforms to connect with your peers and industry professionals and presenting the authentic you in your online content and interactions allows you to cultivate lasting and valuable relationships. Networking, ultimately, is a pivotal element of personal branding. It's not just a tiny part of the process; it links you to your most valuable and insightful contacts.

  6. Monitor and Adapt Your Personal Brand - Monitoring and adapting your personal brand is a continuous and dynamic process. It is necessary to stay tuned to the ever-shifting landscape of your professional and personal life, as well as the perceptions of others. Regularly tracking essential metrics, like website traffic, social media engagement, and the number of speaking engagements, can yield invaluable insights into your brand's effectiveness. This process is akin to fine-tuning a musical instrument, always aiming for perfect harmony. Consider the practice of conducting an annual brand audit – a moment for introspection and recalibration. Through this self-assessment and seeking candid input from trusted advisors, you can ensure that your current image aligns seamlessly with your evolving ambitions and objectives. This adaptive strategy guarantees that your personal brand remains pertinent and harmonizes with your ever-evolving aspirations and how you're perceived by those you aim to inspire and influence.

Maintaining a Powerful Personal Brand - Dos & Don'ts

Managing a personal brand is akin to walking a fine line, delicately balancing the promise of opportunity and differentiation with the inherent risks. There is the example of Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon. In 2022, he stepped away from DJing at high-profile events, a decision rooted in concerns that his hobby was distracting from his leadership role at the investment bank and financial services firm. What began as a vibrant sideline endeavor meant to humanize Solomon's public image had unintentionally drawn criticism internally at Goldman. Some within the organization expressed discontent over strategic errors and lower compensation.

This episode underscores the significance of a well-crafted personal brand for senior business leaders. While Solomon's DJing initially aimed to showcase his diverse interests, it inadvertently led to distractions and controversies. An effective personal brand for a senior business leader must strike a delicate balance, aligning personal interests with professional responsibilities and values. By proactively shaping a personal brand that emphasizes qualities and experiences that resonate with their industry and audience, senior leaders can maintain a clear and focused public image, avoiding unnecessary distractions and controversies that could affect their role and organizational reputation.

When developing and managing your personal brand, do not…:

  • Overpromise & Underdeliver - Setting unrealistic expectations can damage your brand's credibility. Be realistic and accountable.

  • Lose Patience - Building a leadership brand takes time. Don't rush the process; it's a long-term investment.

  • Lack Clarity - Don't be unclear about your brand's values, vision, and purpose. Lack of clarity can confuse your audience. Avoid sending mixed messages contradicting your brand's core values.

  • Be Inconsistent & Inauthentic - Avoid inconsistencies in your messaging and actions. Consistency builds trust. And being insincere or pretending to be someone you're not can damage your personal brand irreparably.

Disregard Industry Trends & Feedback - Failing to stay updated with industry trends and shifts can make your brand outdated. The same goes for feedback. Disregarding feedback, especially negative feedback, and becoming complacent can harm your brand's growth and improvement.

Neglect Your Network & Team - Ignoring your professional network or failing to nurture meaningful relationships can hinder brand expansion. Failing your team's well-being and professional development can also harm your brand as a leader.

  • Overlook the Power of Integrity - Maintain integrity in all your dealings. A breach of trust can irreparably damage your brand.

When developing and managing your personal brand, do…:

  • Stay True to Your Values - Your leadership brand must reflect who you genuinely are. Establish a clear set of values and a vision for your brand, aligning with your leadership style and goals. Authenticity is the cornerstone of effective branding.

  • Consistently Deliver - Meet or exceed the expectations set by your leadership brand. Walk the talk.

  • Engage on Social & Digital Media - In today's digital age, a strategic digital presence is a must.

  • Seek Feedback - Regularly solicit feedback from your team and peers. It can provide valuable insights for refining your leadership brand.

  • Be Authentic - Authenticity is the foundation of a strong personal brand. Be true to who you are and what you stand for.

  • Tell Your Story - Craft a compelling narrative that shares your journey, challenges, and successes. Your story can help people connect with your brand on a personal level.

  • Understand Your Audiences - Get to know your target audience, whether your team, colleagues, industry peers, or the public, to tailor your brand effectively.

  • Communicate Consistently - Maintain constant and transparent communication to reinforce your brand identity. Also, live your brand in your everyday actions and interactions. Your behavior should reflect your brand's values. Showcase your expertise through thought leadership content, speaking engagements, and mentoring.

  • Network Strategically - Build meaningful connections with influential individuals in your field. Collaborate on projects that reinforce your brand.

  • Monitor Metrics - Use quantifiable (non-vanity) metrics like relevant social media engagement, feedback surveys, and industry recognition to evaluate your brand's effectiveness.

  • Embody Your Brand - Live your brand in your everyday actions and interactions. Your behavior should reflect your brand's values.

In conclusion, building a leadership brand is not an overnight task but a journey worth embarking on. Your brand represents who you are as a leader, and it can open doors, foster loyalty, and create lasting impact. Stay true to your values, engage authentically, and embrace innovation, and you'll be well on your way to establishing a leadership brand that sets you apart.

When it comes to business leadership, personal branding isn't a self-promotion campaign; it's a requirement. Your personal brand is your unique signature and can profoundly impact your career, team, and organization's success. Defining your brand, building trust, and leveraging influence can elevate your career and leadership.

So, take the time to invest in your personal brand—it's a wise investment in your future as a business leader.
